I attended a press conference last Wednesday, 5/13, where Senator Robert Menendez (D-NJ) and Representative Debbie Wasserman Schultz (D-FL) introduced federal legislation to support and develop programs nationwide to educate schoolchildren, teachers and parents about keeping the Internet safe for children and teens.   The legislation, the ‘School and Family Education (SAFE) about the Internet Act’ will create a grant program to support safety programs.

I believe it’s great that federal legislators have recognized the importance of incorporating online safety education programs in the schools, and involving teachers and parents in the effort to build awareness about related issues.  I have stressed the necessity of teaching our kids about online privacy and safety as early as possible, preferably when they start to go online.   What goes online, stays online, and yet our kids and teens are not always aware of this when they post personal information and pictures.

Sexting is the next big thing online…

I recently attended a Family Online Safety Institute (FOSI) panel discussion on Capitol Hill addressing the subject of “sexting.” This action, posting nude or semi-nude pictures online or sending them from a cell phone, is the latest online safety issue, of particular concern with teens. Recent reports are that 1 in 5 teens (ages 12 to 17) are engaging in “sexting.” Not only is the action an extremely inappropriate and risky behavior, it can also be illegal by violating child pornography and other laws.

Out Cold dvd President Donna Rice Hughes, and High School Assistant Principle Ting-Yi Oei, I wondered about the relationship of the behavior of sexting to the kids’, tweens’ and teens’ concept of privacy. What is their understanding of online privacy? What level of control do they believe they have over their personal information or photos? Do they understand how their personal information or photos can be distributed to others without their permission or awareness?

Education and awareness about the dangers of sexting are important, but it is also important that kids and teens also learn about online privacy. A survey I conducted last year revealed that teens are 14 times more likely than adults to post pictures of themselves online. The survey also found that while almost all teens are concerned about protecting their personal information online, their behavior doesn’t quite match their level of concern. Sexting is certainly a prime example of my survey’s findings.

A recent article highlights the opportunity we all have to use the privacy settings that are available with social networks to avoid embarrassment — or other potential violations of our online privacy.   The article in Herald Net, Use Facebook Privacy Settings to Avoid Trouble Bullet video Spencers Mountain video (April 21, 2009) highlights all the potential embarrassing situations one can encounter on a social network such as Facebook.  For example, having a co-worker view a picture of you in your bikini!  The article informs you that you can use Facebook’s privacy settings to manage access to your photos and customize your other personal information on Facebook.  I recently released a publication to give online users a step-by-step guide to employing privacy settings on social networks such as Facebook and online shopping sites.  Go here The Chronicles of Riddick: Dark Fury rip for your copy of Consumer Guide to Online Privacy. Online privacy settings are available to consumers and can be invaluable tools to help avoid embarrassment or other “troubles” resulting from a loss of privacy online.
