At the Wharton Business School conference that I blogged about on Monday, researchers provided information about consumers’ behaviors online with regards to privacy. A professor from Carnegie Mellon University, Alessandro Acquisti, discussed some recent research he conducted. Acquisti commented that “People [say] privacy [is] important to them, yet they engage in behaviors that indicate a remarkable lack of concern”. The survey I conducted last spring

Goodbye Solo download revealed the same online behavior – consumers, particularly teenagers, are willing to post pictures and give out other personal information online. Another interesting point he made was that his study found consumers are more likely to share information when they witness others sharing information. If this so-called “herding effect” works for consumers sharing too much information, then if more consumers are educated about the risks of sharing too much personal information online and then modify their behavior, perhaps other consumers will follow.

| What’s a little personal information among “friends”? |
|
Earlier this year, Wharton Business School at the University of Pennsylvania held an Information Security Best Practices Conference. This article from Knowledge@Wharton describes the conference.
One topic discussed at the conference was the impact social networking has had on personal privacy. Wharton professor Peter S. Fader said “Our kids today will give everything [in terms of personal information] away, but it’s not at all clear how this will shake out in the long run”. I’ve mentioned several times before that kids are viewing privacy differently than adults and are more comfortable posting information about themselves online. This is one of the reasons why I started the Consumer Privacy Awareness project – to educate consumers about how their activities online impact their personal privacy. A George Washington University professor, Lance Hoffman, spoke about the potential identity risks of consumers offfering too much information on social networking sites — and that information combined with other information online can lead to a risk of identity theft. Professor Hoffman also mentioned that consumers aren’t reading the privacy policies on websites. My survey conducted earlier this year revealed the same thing.
The Rock dvdrip Social networking is a great tool for consumers to stay in touch , communicate more and reconnect with old friends. However, there are real risks when we provide too much information about ourselves online. I urge consumers to think-twice about the personal information you post online and to make sure you set the appropriate privacy selections for the social networking sites you are visiting. | I filed comments with the FCC on the national broadband plan… |

Anastasia trailer What does the economic stimulus have to do with online safety and privacy? Well, a great deal if you ask me. Buried in the many facets of the economic stimulus package passed by Congress this year is one component of utmost interest to consumers – a directive to the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) to develop a national broadband plan to increase the availability of high-speed Internet – broadband — for everyone in the U.S. In an effort to fulfill that goal, FCC recently asked any and all parties interested in the components of a national broadband plan to submit comments to the FCC for consideration. The deadline for comments was June 8th. I filed comments addressing not only the benefits of high-speed Internet services, particularly for aging communities, but also the barriers that are keeping users from adopting high-speed Internet access. Two of these barriers I have identified are online safety and privacy. Consumers will be less likely to use broadband services if they don’t have a safe and secure experience online. I urged the commission to include a strategy to address these issues in developing any national broadband plan. Specifically, the FCC should work with consumer organizations, the industry, online safety experts and others to support programs to educate Internet users about online safety and privacy. Only when issues like online safety and privacy are addressed through a national education effort, will consumers begin to feel comfortable using broadband services and engage completely in all the benefits of the online experience.
