The Weight of Water ipod I just read an MSNBC online article reporting on a recent IBM study that found there has been a significant drop in the number of “phishing” emails this year. The IBM midyear security report found that phishing emails were 0.1 percent of all spam in the first six months of 2009, compared to 0.2 percent to 0.8 percent of all spam during the same period in 2008.

Bella psp Phishing refers to the practice of sending out fake e-mails for the purpose of getting consumers to respond with sensitive information, such as usernames, passwords, credit card numbers, bank account information, etc. The phishing e-mails often look and feel identical to legitimate businesses, often ones that a consumer may do business with or be quite familiar with, such as a popular online store.

The interesting point about the IBM study is that it attributes the drop in phishing emails to two factors: 1) an increase in consumer increased awareness about these fraudulent emails and 2) security software is getting better at filtering out the phishing sites before consumers ever see them.
This is good news for consumers, but it also serves as a reminder for all of us to be vigilant in reviewing our e-mails carefully. Scam artists are getting more and more creative, and as consumers become more savvy and aware, and as the industry develops better filters, we can be sure the scammers will try to stay one step ahead of the game. Always look carefully at the e-mails you receive and never respond to an unsolicited e-mail with personal information, particularly sensitive financial or personally identifying information. My Consumer Guide to Online Privacy has some more information that can be helpful.
