| Facebook Phishing Scam |
|
Social networking site Facebook is the latest victim of a phishing scam — a real example for consumers of how important it is to be aware of cyber security protection measures. A recent TODAY Show segment
discussed how Facebook users received fake messages from their friends claiming to be stranded in London after a robbery. Facebook has issued a statement warning its users about this scam and educating about how to avoid a future phishing scam.

are great examples of why cyber security is important and how it can affect each of us personally. We should all educate ourselves about the latest cyber attacks and take precautions to ensure our safety. Phishing The Upside of Anger film can be an easy threat to fall victim to, especially when the e-mail (or in Facebook’s case, the Facebook chat option) comes from a friend’s e-mail address or online profile. When entering information online, make sure that you are using a legitimate website. For instance, if you are on Facebook, make sure that the web address When a Stranger Calls psp

And most importantly, don’t be afraid to ask your “friend” for more information. If your friend needs your help, they will be more than happy to provide it to verify their identity – for both their safety and your own.

| October 1 Event Launches National Cyber Security Awareness Month |
|
|
All of us, not just government and industry, have an important role to play in keeping our networks safe, and as consumers we need to be aware of the cyber security measures we each can take. Shared Responsibility. That’s the theme of this year’s National Cyber Security Awareness Month that was launched at an event I attended in Washington , D.C. on October 1. The National Cyber Security Alliance sponsored an event that brought together government leaders, industry and non-profit organizations. Government speakers included U.S. Department of Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano, White House National Security Staff Action Senior Director for Cyber Security Chris Painter, and Deputy Secretary of Defense William J. Lynn III.

NCSA and the Department of Homeland Security are emphasizing that cyber security is everyone’s responsibility in this year’s month-long awareness campaign. The effort will be to reinforce the message that all computer users, not just industry and the government, have a responsibility for cyber security, to protect themselves and their families. Secretary Napolitano spoke about the “wash your hands” practice to avoid the flu that has been so effective with the general public. It is also important that consumers practice good “cyber hygiene” to keep themselves and others safe and help improve the overall security of our cyberspace.
